How is this club different from the University's Outdoor Recreation?
Both UA's Outdoor Recreation and the Outdoor Adventures Club's main goal is to get people outside. The only difference in how they reach this goal is based off how they were set up. Outdoor Rec is a part of the University, which means they have to go through certain processes and have capabilities that the OAC doesn't. The Outdoor Adventures Club is set up as a register student organization which means that we're more member-focused and plan our trips based off what our members want to do.
Do I need to have any previous experience to join the club?
You don't have to have any type of previous experience to join the club! We want everyone to enjoy the outdoors just as much as we do! Because of this, we take members from all different experience backgrounds and we will train you so that you can have a blast on our trips!
What is the commitment level like?
Our goal is to get as many of Alabama's students into the outdoors as we can. That means that we aren't going to make you come to a certain number of meetings or earn a certain number of points in order to be able to go on a trip. While we would like to see our members coming back for every meeting and every trip, we know that not everyone will be able to make it and that not everyone will be interested in going on every trip. It's because of this that we very rarely will require you to come to a meeting to be able to go on a trip; in fact, the only time we'll require you come to a meeting is for a trip with a higher skill level so that we know everyone will be safe. However, even for these meetings we let members meet with officers outside the regular meeting time if they can't make it so they can still go on the trip.
Can I still join if I can't make meetings?
Absolutely! We still send out the information about the trips and events we have coming up over email and we'll post them on Facebook and Twitter so you can stay up-to-date about what's going on. So if you can't make the meetings, but see a trip you'd like to go on, we'd love to see you there!
How do I join the club?
To join the Outdoor Adventures Club, all you have to do is fill out a quick membership application that can be reached by clicking on the "Apply Here!" button at the top of every page, or just by clicking here. After you fill it out, our Executive Committee will review it and let you know what they decided as soon as possible!
What do I do after I get accepted?
After we accept members, we have a few things we ask them to do before they go on trips to help the club run smoothly:
1. Dues - We do have dues for the club which are set at $20/semester. This helps us lower the cost for trips, run the various features we have, and to be able to afford the membership perks we offer.
2. Membership Agreement - Currently, we ask all of our members to turn in a membership agreement that lets them know what rules we have in place and how the club functions. By signing and turning in the agreement, the members are saying that they will follow the rules and respect their safety, the safety of others, and the purity of our trip destinations.
After that, you're all done and set to go on our trips!
What types of benefits do I get by joining?
We do our best to make sure our members get as much as they possilby can by joining our club. Here's a quick list of some of the benefits you will get by joining the Outdoor Adventures Club:
•10% of gear rentals at UA's Outdoor Recreation - ask an officer for details!
•You'll get to meet more people around campus who love the outdoors like you!
•If you're new to campus, it gives you the chance to make some friends and learn more about the area around Tuscaloosa!
•You'll learn valuable skills about how to camp, backpack, climb, and more from people who have had years of experience in the area!
•You'll be able to take trips for a much lower cost than you would be able to on your own or with other groups/companies.
•You'll have access to our entire inventory of gear for you to borrow for your own trips!
